Shunkozan Engaku Temple

Shunkozan Engaku Temple

Built in 807 A.D., the temple faces the port where the Kitamaebune ship, a Japanese Heritage, waited for the favorable wind to sail. Many cultural assets such as a votive paining of a ship “Funaema” and plaques of shipowners’ chonmage cuttings “Mage gaku” were dedicated to the temple, as the shipowners were deeply religious and made offerings to the gods before sailing to the sea.
