Tsugaru Style Kokeshi Wooden Dolls

Tsugaru style Kokeshi wooden dolls originated around Nuruyu Onsen, and of old were made by Hidetaro Mori(as known as Morihide) as Nuruyu Kokeshi. The dolls have all kinds of expressions, and are decorated with varied designs like Ainu patterns, Daruma pictures, or tree peony flowers of the Tsugaruhan crest. Also, the hourglass shape of Nuruyu Kokeshi, not found in any other region, gives them a special cuteness. Tsugaru kokeshi, born of the deep snow climate, are beloved for their simple, hand-made beauty and color.
