Aoike (Blue Pond)
Juniko (Twelve Lakes) sits in foothills of the World Natural Heritage Site Shirakami-Sanchi, surrounded by a mystical landscape of 33 lakes and marshes. The most popular spot of them all is this, Aoike, the blue pond. The serene dark waters look as if they’ve been stained with blue ink. The incredibly clear water offer a perfect view of the bottom 9m down, and the reflection of the surrounding beech trees and leaves add to the beguiling mystique. In summer the water is a gentle blue, but from Autumn on the water turns a calm navy.
